George re-traces part of JB Priestley's journey across England

J B Priestley was already a renowned author, having published ‘The Good Companions’, ‘Angel Pavement’, and ‘Dangerous Corner’, when he embarked on a lengthy journey around England. The result of his travels was a book called English Journey, which he published in 1934. Priestley had undertaken his journey, to take stock of industrial and rural England against the backdrop of harsh economic times.

Priestley visited Liverpool, a place that in the preceding decade had been at the centre of heated debates about degeneracy and race-mixing. In re-tracing Priestley’s visit to Liverpool, George reveals how Priestley welcomed what he saw. And what Priestley saw, visiting a local school was a ‘miniature League of nations assembly gone mad’.
