Arctic feast

In the Arctic autumn, tundra plant seeds disperse on the wind and the golden leaves show the seasonal change. In the Canadian barrenlands this is the season when caribou can feed and travel at a leisurely pace. Bull caribou with large antlers graze. The males have shed the velvet from their antlers, leaving the blood-stained bone exposed. At this time of year the caribou eat berries and fungi, so they can increase their weight dramatically. Each night of frost adds a line of ice to the tundra ponds. As the first snows fall, all Arctic animals are busy building up their fat reserves, to get them through the eight month long winter.
