Role Reverse Birds
With almost all species of birds, it is the males who have the brighter marking. But with red phalaropes it is the females who are brightly coloured and the females who fight over the males. But when they mate it is the duller one that mounts the back of the more colourful one. With red phalaropes the males build and guard the nest. The female then returns occasionally to mate and add more eggs to the nest. While she sits, he stands aside. After that, it is up to him to look after the eggs and incubate the chicks.
