Michael Ball celebrates the career of the delightful Miss Doris Day, with contributions from some of her leading men and the whip-crack-away girl herself, who chats to Michael from her Californian home.
Born Doris Kappelhoff in Cincinnati, Ohio, Day started her career singing with dance bands and it was her audition song for bandleader Barney Rapp - Day After Day - which provided the inspiration for her stage name.
Paired with an array of leading men, including Clark Gable, Jack Lemmon, David Niven, James Garner and Rock Hudson, Doris was voted Top Box Office Female Star for four straight years during the early 60s, and was among the Top 10 for 10 straight years.
Just the mention of her name conjures up memories of the joy she's bought to many, through hit songs like Que Sera Sera; Perhaps, Perhaps, Perhaps; and joyful performances on the silver screen. Doris is a true inspiration to many and though she's had much heartbreak in her life, she is a fighter.
Earlier this year, Doris became the oldest artist to have a top ten album in the UK, with new material. Day's My Heart entered the charts at number nine, 62 years after the 87-year-old's debut album was released in the US, with one of the songs playlisted on Radio 2.
