The District Nurse confronts Dr. O'Casey
Headstrong Megan Roberts, newly arrived district nurse in a South Wales town, is ready to fight the hypocrisy of a tightknit community set in its ways and suspicious of change.
Megan Roberts (Nerys Hughes) confronts Dr. O'Casey (Rio Fanning) in an attempt to convince him to take urgent action to prevent what could become an epidemic. In this first ever episode broadcast Tuesday 10 January 1984, headstrong Megan Roberts, a newly arrived district nurse in a South Wales town, is ready to fight the hypocrisy of a tight-knit community set in its ways and suspicious of change.
The District Nurse heralded the welcome return of popular actress Nerys Hughes, late of The Liver Birds. Devised and created by Julia Smith and Tony Holland (who would famously launch ´óÏó´«Ã½ Television’s most successful and enduring soap-serial, EastEnders, barely twelve months later). With everything – barring the hat – going for her, how could Nerys have felt anything but enthusiasm for the role? She was, in fact, torn apart in making the decision to play Megan. “The children, you see". Since Ben was born (he was nine at the time) she had never been away from home for longer than the odd night. She turned down all sorts of super parts prior to this because it would have meant being away. For this series she needed to be in Cardiff for months. Her husband, Patrick, who’s a television cameraman, was away a lot too. Rehearsals were switched from Cardiff to London for her sake, and when filming in South Wales, Nerys got home whenever she could.
The School scenes were filmed at Pont-y-gof school in Ebbw Vale, shortly before the old school was demolished. The children and teachers at the school were involved in the first two series. The outdoor school and street scenes were filmed at a small village near Tredegar. Most of the houses used have now been demolished, however the street still remains.
