The Institution of Civil Engineers says we all need to be doing more as water use in the UK has reached a critical position. The group has put forward a number of recommendations, including fitting a water meter to every home and making it more expensive to use water for gardening or washing cars.

The call comes as the UK's largest water provider, Thames Water, which covers parts of Beds, Herts and Bucks has said that it could lift a hosepipe ban sooner than expected because record rainfall has eased drought conditions.
