Forced marriage, domestic violence and premature births
We await an announcement regarding forced marriages, discuss a survey revealing that men still joke about domestic violence and hear how premature births have risen 1.5% since 1990.
The Home Secretary is expected to announce later today that parents who force their children to marry will face jail under new laws. It comes after warnings that up to 8,000 young women a year are forced into marriages without their consent.
Nearly a quarter of men think it is acceptable to joke about giving a woman "a good slap." A YouGov poll of over 2000 men shows that just one in five would speak up if they heard someone joke about domestic violence and fewer that 3 in 5 men would intervene if they knew someone was committing violence at home. The study has been released to raise awareness before the European football championships where traditionally there is an increase in domestic abuse.
Urgent action is needed to reduce the rate of premature births. That's according to a study in The Lancet, which says the number of babies born too soon in the UK has increased by 1.5% since 1990.
