Episode Two: From Tribes to Nations
Michael Wood uncovers the story of Britain's original four nations by drawing on the observations of Bede, an English monk who lived more than a thousand years ago. Bede was the first to attempt a history of the British people and noted there were four main groups. The Britons - or Welsh - lived in kingdoms to the west; the Picts inhabited the far north of England while the Scots spread out to the Western Isles. The fourth group was the English, the newcomers who arrived after the fall of Rome.
