In 1990, during the Gulf War, Debbie and Leslie were taken hostage for a period of three months as ‘human shield guests’ by Saddam’s Army at the Monsour Melia hotel in Iraq. During this time Leslie proposed and the story of their marriage became a weapon of propaganda as Debbie was given the title ‘Bride of Baghdad’.
