Why was religion so important to Tudor people?
This clip opens with a description of the pre-Reformation Catholic Church, explaining that it would be almost unrecognisable to people today. At the centre was the priest – an almost magical figure who was thought to be able to transform bread into the body of Christ. Head of the Church was the Pope, to whom even the king deferred. In the early 1500s, Henry VIII - defender of the faith - accepted the Pope’s position unquestioningly.
