Why is Bastille Day celebrated?

Every year, on 14 July, French people celebrate the storming of The Bastille.

When the prison was first stormed in 1789, it was one of the first major acts of the French Revolution. It symbolised oppression by the ruling classes at a time when the poor were starving and the building was torn down in three days.

The fight in the name of liberty, equality and fraternity had begun.

Why is the storming of The Bastille a cause for celebration every year in France?
