The historian Amanda Vickery has been delving into the history of masculinity for a new radio series. She tells Woman’s Hour’s Jane Garvey her surprise at what her research threw up. Amanda and Jane agree though that the sailor is in many ways the ideal archetype – a man that protects but can also sew.
