In the news hour from 5pm, thousands of teenagers in Suffolk have been finding out what their GCSE results are. Nationally, tougher targets have been brought in as the Government tries to address criticism that standards have been falling. There's also been harsher marking, especially in English. There's been a fall across the country in the proportion of GCSE entries awarded at least a C grade for the first time since the exams were introduced in 1988. Lesley hears from a former exam marker who says we're going in the right direction, from Geoff Barton, headteacher of King Edward VI school in Bury St Edmunds, who is calling for an enquiry and from students at The Denes High School in Lowestoft.
Six fire crews have spent much of the afternoon dealing with a crop fire on the edge of Ipswich. Police were called to the scene of the suspected arson attack just before 1.30pm after reports that a man was wielding what looked like a knife in a field beside Humber Doucy Lane. A taser was used and a man was then detained by police and taken to hospital. Lesley speaks to Station Commander Richard Wood from Suffolk Fire and Rescue about how they got the blaze under control.
Signs are to be improved on a diversion in East Suffolk following a heated public meeting. Emergency sewage works have meant the A1120 is closed at Yoxford, but local businesses have complained that the alternative route takes traffic well away from them at peak holiday season. The meeting took place at Sibton White Horse this morning where around 17 companies aired their views to Anglian Water and the Highways Agency. Lesley hears from Neil Mason, Landlord of the White Horse and from Anglian Water's Antony Innes.
In the first hour from 4pm, Rehearsals are under way at the New Wolsey Theatre for their opening production of the Autumn Season, Mods and Rox, which is based on the story of Cyrano de Bergerac. Lesley popped into the theatre the other day to meet three of the cast: Peter Machester, Francesca Jackson (who you may well remember because she was a finalist from the 大象传媒's I'd Do Anything) and Michael Woolston-Thomas.
After 6pm, the East of England Ambulance Service has given credit to Community First Responders for it's success with heart patients. The trust has come second in the country for cardiac arrest survival rates with nearly 25% of people living to tell the tale. Only London comes ahead of us with just over 30%. Lesley chats to Ann Chapman, a first responder with East Bergholt Heartwatch.
Lesley's featured artist is John Lennon and there's also a chance to hear some of 大象传媒 Radio Suffolk's best bits from the day.
