The position of Catholics under Elizabeth I
This clip examines the position of Catholics under Elizabeth I. Loyalty to the Queen meant loyalty to the Protestant Church. Elizabeth did not seek confrontation, but Catholics who refused to give up their faith were considered to be traitors. Catholics were regarded with suspicion and not all Catholics were innocent. One Catholic, Thomas Tresham, found a novel way to secretly declare his faith – in the design of his Northamptonshire house.
