Early domestic appliances

In the early 20th century, people woke up to a cold house every morning before the fires were lit. Everyone depended on coal to heat their houses and cook their food. Food was usually bought on the day it was needed; no one had refrigerators so keeping it fresh was a constant problem. Housework was hard, physical toil, and the weekly wash typically took a whole day. Some technology did exist to make housework bearable, but it was cheaper for some to employ servants.
