RCN concern over possible closure of mental health beds

The Royal College of Nursing says it's concerned over possible plans to cut mental health beds in Waveney by more than 50%.

Operation Mermaid targets criminals on the county's roads.

In the news hour from 5pm, it's World Mental Health Day today, but it comes at a time when there's concern over mental health services in part of our county. Staff working at Carlton Court in Lowestoft and Northgate in Great Yarmouth say there are plans to cut the number of acute mental health care beds, shared between the 2 hospitals, from 42 to 20. The Norfolk and Suffolk NHS Foundation Trust insists no decision had been made. The Royal College of Nursing's director in the East, Karen Webb, says it's not feasible to treat patients with severe breakdowns in their own homes.

Suffolk Police have spent the day targeting criminals who use the county's roads. Operation Mermaid saw officers from Suffolk and Norfolk using Automatic Number Plate Recognition cameras. The aim was to detect vehicle crime and offences and remove unsafe vehicles from the roads. Foz speaks to Sergeant Julian Ditcham from Suffolk Police's Roads Policing and Firearms Operations Unit.

A Suffolk council official has admitted that checks and risk assessments weren't properly carried out for a country fair at which a woman died. 57 year old Carol Bullett was crushed when a horse bolted with a carriage into crowds at Nowton Park near Bury St Edmunds in June last year. An inquest into her death is in its second week in Bury St Edmunds. Alison Acton looks over today's evidence.

Prince Roy Bates of Sealand has died aged 91. The former Army major is famed for taking over an old Second World War fort off Felixstowe and declaring it an independent state. Foz looks back at his life with his son Michael.

In the first hour from 4pm, Glen Pearce treads the boards of Suffolk theatre and adventurer Mark Beaumont previews his forthcoming show at the Spa in Felixstowe.

In the music hour from 6pm, Jon Boden and Sam Sweeney from award winning folk big band Bellowhead chat about the group's new album Broadside and look back at their Suffolk gigs this year.
