Low earners at Thanet Council could see wages slashed despite high earners in for wage increase
John and Clare with the latest news, travel, and weather, plus stories from around Kent.
Sue McGonigal, Chief Executive of Thanet District Council is proposing slashing salaries of new joiners by as much as 20% whilst at the same time increasing pay for senior managers.
Under new proposals under consultation until November, those earning between 拢13,000 and 拢15,000 would in future earn on average 拢2,700 less than before.
Other cuts could apply to higher wage bands too but those in senior management earing 拢72,000 or above could be rewarded with increases between 11-14%.
Neither Sue McGonigalm nor Clive Hart, leading of Thanet District Council, were prepared to be interviewed on the subject but Thanet independent Councillor Ian Driver shares his thoughts on the proposals (07.09).
Tony Travers, a professor of local government at the London School of Economics, tells John and Clare what he thinks about the potential restructure (08.08).
Also on the programme, the Transport Salaried Staffs Association says train operators in Kent are ripping passengers off over refunds for delayed trains.
The TSSA says South Eastern, South and First Capital Connect received a share of 拢172m from Network Rail last year for delays, however only 拢1.3m was paid out to passengers from these rail operators.
The Association of Train Operating Companies says these claims show a misunderstanding of the rail industry.
Louise Ellman from the Transport Select Committee and Manuel Cortes, General Secretary of the TSSA Union discuss whether or not Kent's commuters are getting a fair deal (08.21).
And Dartford MP Gareth Johnson has been singing the praises of the town in the commons, applauding the work of Dartford Borough Council and local traders and their efforts to turn the area's fortunes around.
It was awarded an 拢80,000 Portas Grant in May and Johnson says as a result, a number of companies have been encouraged to invest in the town.
Our reporter Alex Ward investigates what local people in Dartford think and Gareth Johnson tells John and Clare exactly how the town can continue to grow (07.49).
