Council care home plans put on hold

The county council's move to transfer its 16 care homes to a private company will be looked at again by councillors after the opposition Labour group called in the plans.

In the news hour from 5pm, the county council's transfer of care homes to a private company is on hold. The local authority's Labour group has called in its decision to transfer its homes to Care UK, something that was only voted through earlier this week. Our reporter Andrea Davidson has been looking at today's developments.

NHS Suffolk's medical director is welcoming a government scheme which will see doctors' skills re-assessed every year to ensure they are fit to practice. At present, GPs can go their entire career without facing any formal assessment of their competency. The new medical validation scheme has been announced by Health Secretary Jeremy Hunt. Dr Andrew Hassan, a GP himself in Stanton near Bury St Edmunds tells Foz it's been a long time coming.

It's hoped 500 jobs can be created here in the East thanks to a new 拢3m government boost. The New Anglia Local Enterprise Partnership has been awarded the money from the Regional Growth Fund. Foz hears more from Chris Starkie, the programme director for the New Anglia LEP.

In the first hour from 4pm, the latest film and DVD releases with Simon Rose. Also, there's a rare chance to see an old shunting engine working under full steam in Leiston on Sunday. The Long Shop Museum is hosting its annual end of season Final Fling Steam Day. The recently restored engine, Sirapite, will be the main attraction, but there's lots more going too.
