In September, three members of a British family - the al-Hillis - were shot, along with a cyclist, in strange and brutal circumstances on a quiet road in the French Alps.

Since then, there has been no sign that the police investigation into the murders has made any progress.

Now, for the first time, one of the family's relatives has given an interview.

Dr Ahmed al-Saffar is the uncle of Mrs al-Hilli, who was killed. He has been in the UK for the funerals, which took place over the past weekend.

He told the Today programme's Zubeida Malik he is concerned that the police are only focusing on the family, and ignoring other lines of inquiry.

He said: "We hope that both the French and the British investigation will bring the murderer to justice as soon as possible. This would give us a kind of comfort."

Mr and Mrs al-Hilli's young daughters, Zainab and Zeena, witnessed the shooting but survived. Dr al-Saffar has said they are trying to come to terms with what happend.

"It was not easy for them to cope with this, but we are working hard to give some comfort for them. What they have suffered and gone through is beyond imagination. They are traumatised."

He added: "[There has been] a painful impact on the extended family. All members are devastated by the news. Many of us still cannot comprehend [it]."
