In 1997, four seasons into the Ellen show, Ellen DeGeneres, the actress, came out as gay. The ABC Network decided the fictional Ellen could also come out. It was a risk as half of Americans believed gay sex should be a crime. However, the episode attracted 42 million viewers and today, four in ten Americans have close friends or relatives who are gay.
