Achilles and Odysseus: fate, destiny and free will (audio)

Adam Nicholson discusses the characters of Achilles and Odysseus and the extent to which they illustrate Homer鈥檚 views on fate, destiny and free will. The text of the Iliad is shown to be driven by the demands of fate and inescapability of destiny, whilst the Odyssey focuses on the chance of a new life and a challenge to fate. Achilles is held up as an example of an individual who is fixed in his rage. Odysseus however is shown to always slip away from his fate.
