Hew Locke's sculptures and portraits

Artist Hew Locke uses cardboard to create highly decorative pieces of work, transforming something that is cheap into something that is precious. He demonstrates the techniques he uses to create a sculpture from start to finish. He describes how he wants to create an animal that is trapped, packaged and tied down to a table. He demonstrates how he constructed his sculpture from wood and built it up with newspaper and masking tape, which he covered with fur, and finally packaged with cardboard, using wording from customs such as Air Mail. He is interested in exotic new arrivals to Britain - things that should not be here but are here. He wanted the piece to be attractive and scary at the same time. The sculpture could be a real beast from Windsor or a mythical creature. We also see some of his cardboard portraits of Royalty.
