
The Whirling Dervishes of Sufism
The background, beliefs and practices of some Sufi Muslims, the Mawlawi,or Whirling Dervishes. Presenter Reverend Peter Owen-Jones visits Aleppo to observe a Sufi celebration. He gives a brief background to Sufism and comments on the contrast between the fame of the Whirling Dervishes and the reality of how they are regarded with suspicion by some Muslim authorities. The presenter observes some worshippers whirling and one of them explains the spirituality that he feels.
