Maximilian Kolbe, Catholic Priest in Auschwitz

The story of Maximilian Kolbe who volunteered to die in place of a stranger in the Nazi concentration camp of Auschwitz. The film starts with a short scene where pupils are watching a film of a concentration camp and discussing what it would be like to be there. The film flips to Franciszek Gajowniczek, who was a prisoner of war at Auschwitz and tells the horrific story of what went on in the camp. Franciszek remembers a Franscican Catholic Priest who was also in the camp. In 1941 a prisoner escaped, which meant that 10 prisoners would be killed as punishment. Franciszek was the last name to be called, but Maximilian stepped forward and asked to replace him. His wish was granted and Franciszek was saved.
