The parallels between the fictional 'David Copperfield' and the facts of the early life of its author, Charles Dickens, are explored. The author's early life as a boy from a wealthy family gave him certain expectations. However the fortunes of the Dickens family changed and Charles spent a dark period of his life working in a boot blacking factory.
