An explanation of how the Norse settlement of Jarlshof in Shetland, Scotland, has taught archaeologists about the Norse and how they lived. The Norse settled at Jarlshof because it was near the sea, had a supply of fresh water and the land was fertile. Stones on the beach helped them build longhouses. Objects found at Jarlshof such as bronze jewellery, net weights, games and drawings reveal that the Norse were farmers, fishermen and craftsmen as well as raiders.
