Asafo flag making in Ghana
The Ghanaian town of Cape Coast is alive with flags - they flutter in the wind at the harbour and are used by local Asafo groups of young men in their traditional dances. Mr Zachary is about to sew a new flag for one of the groups. He goes to the market to choose the fabric before following tradition by making the flag in secret, under the cover of night. The next morning he presents the flag at the Asafo shrine. There is spiritual singing to call for blessing from ancestors before all the Asafo groups of Cape Coast parade through the streets – dancing and waving their flags.
