Addition by counting on to the next ten
Breaking numbers into five and a bit is demonstrated as a strategy for adding single digit numbers. An interviewer is with two cooks who are all in a flap. They think they have lost a competition to bake the most buns because some of their buns have been stolen. They are persuaded to count the buns. One cook has made 25 buns and the other has made 7. They start by showing the 25 and the 7. They add 7 by counting on 5 to make 30 and then add 2 making 32. This means they have won the competition after all.
