Why do aviation pilots need to know wind direction and speed?
Pilots need to know about weather conditions such as wind speed and direction before they take-off. Reports from the Meteorological Office provide the necessary information. Some winds can make flying difficult, while tail winds help to reduce the journey time. A weather vane and compass can help to find the wind direction. There are many different names for winds such as southerly, easterly, northerly and westerly, depending on which direction the winds are blowing.
