Preventing household fires - flame retardants

All household furniture fabrics must be treated with fire retardant by law. This safety measure ensures that in the event of a fire the fabric burns slowly and produces very little heat and smoke. Research and testing ensures that the manufacturing industry is kept up to date with the safest materials available. In this film we see how four fabrics – cotton, polyester cotton, silk and fire retardant cotton – are tested for how quickly they burn and how much heat and smoke they produce.
