Dialects in medieval England
Animation showing a medieval peasant going on a journey to find a feather to put in his hat. Variations in dialect between regions leads to confusion, but when William Caxton develops printing, a standardised version of English becomes commonly used and allows the peasant to make himself understood. The clip illustrates the value of standard English, and introduces the concept of dialect as, in effect, separate languages.
