Sailing away from Scotland
In the first half of the 19th Century, sailing to Canada took eight or nine weeks. The voyage to Autralia took well over three months. Apart from the dangers of the voyage itself, overcrowding and poor conditions led to epidemics of dysentery, smallpox and measles.
