HIV and AIDS in South Africa
The Entabeni Trust was set up in 2003 to look after children affected by South Africa's AIDS pandemic. Nearly 10% of South Africans have HIV or AIDS. In KwaZulu Natal more than 200,000 children were orphaned by AIDS in 2000. AIDS has spread quickly through KwaZulu Natal through contact between travelling lorry drivers and prostitutes. The Entabeni Trust provides a mix of permanent home and day care for children affected by AIDS. Many of the children contracted AIDS themselves at birth. Poverty and malnutrition are highlighted as contributing factors affecting their ability to combat the disease and associated infections.
