A dramatised episode from the childhood of Charles Dickens. Charles is sent to work in a boot blacking factory which turns out to be a job in a rat-infested cellar, where the young Dickens - or 'Chickens' as he is nicknamed - meets a colleague named Bob Fagin. Meanwhile, Charles' father is imprisoned for debt.
