Health improvements in Finland
At the beginning of the 1970s, the Finnish government began a campaign to promote healthy living - reducing mortality from heart disease by 70%. Scotland has followed this example, reducing mortality from heart disease from 18000 in 1989 to 13000 in 2000. Although Finnish studies found that diet played the major role in determining coronary health, regional variation in cholesterol and other genetic factors could possibly play a part.
