Formation of limestone and basalt rocks on the Antrim coast in Northern Ireland

Solid rock is everywhere in County Antrim. It is mostly covered with vegetation, but parts are exposed along the coastline. The black rock which forms most cliffs is basalt, and the white rock seen elsewhere is limestone. Limestone is harder and much older than basalt. It was formed millions of years ago in tropical waters. It is sometimes possible to spot Belemnite fossils within the limestone. Volcanoes which erupted in this region in the past led to lava being poured over the rocks and, once cooled, it formed the land mass we still see today.
