How are new forests planted?
Thousands of trees are needed for planting in Northern Ireland's forests. Millions of seeds are planted in a nursery in Co. Tyrone every year. The seedlings are vulnerable to frost, and by the end of the first year the surviving plants are transplanted for three years. After this the trees are moved to the forest. It takes 40 years to grow a mature forest.
