The relationship between heat, volume and temperature

A group of students explore why larger volumes of water require more energy to heat up. Why, when heated for the same length of time with the same heat energy, does a 1 litre beaker of water reach 50掳C, whereas a 4 litre beaker of water reaches only 32掳C?

Stella explains that the energy from the heat is the same in each case, but is spread out in different volumes of water. In other words, the large beaker receives less energy per litre of water and therefore it heats up less.
