Kabbadi and Indian dance choreography
How choreographer Shobana Jeyasingh's 'Raid' dance work was inspired by the Indian wrestling sport, kabbadi. Examples of the game being played are shown and Shobana Jeyasingh selects key features which she uses in the dance. The key player in kabbadi is the 'raider' who attacks the opposition by tagging or wrestling them. The relationship of attacking and defending moves are transposed into the finished dance. The dance is supported by drumming, chanting and set design. A professional dancer explains how the piece brings together sport and dance.
