South Africa and El Salvador

Stories on turbulent times in South Africa and a truce in El Salvador. Presented by Pascale Harter.

Andrew Harding reports on the conference of the ruling ANC party in South Africa. The gathering will decide who will lead the party through the next few years, and thus probably who will run country. At the same time, the ill-health of Nelson Mandela, has focussed attention on where South Africa is at, and where it's going.
Also on the programme, in one of the most violent nations on earth, peace has broken out. Last year, El Salvador had one of the highest homicide rates in the world. But since March, the number of murders has plummeted because a truce has been brokered between the country’s two most violent street gangs. Linda Pressly visited the imprisoned leaders of one gang that has signed up to the peace – but she didn’t expect to find hairnets and teddy bears.
Presented by Pascale Harter.
