India's pashmina guru
In today’s programme, Anu Anand meets a pashmina expert trying to promote traditional scarf-making in India. Presented by Pascale Harter.
Like so many ancient crafts in India, hand-woven Kashmiri shawls – or pashminas as they’re known the world over – are disappearing. They once graced the shoulders of emperors, princes and noble-men and were all the rage among Europe’s upper classes. But today, the hand-made scarves are being replaced by machine-made replicas. Anu Anand has been tracing the threads of the pashmina from its ancient roots to modern markets all around the world, and she’s met one of India’s top experts. Presented by Pascale Harter.
