Amazon farmers, Iranian journalists, and the Frenchmen learning the art of love
Stories about Amazon farmers, Iranian journalists, and the Frenchmen learning the art of love. Plus two tales from Eastern Europe, and the Middle East conflict – on a plane.
In some parts of Brazil, the rule of law is still tenuous, and opportunities are thin on the ground. This week, Sue Branford tells a story about one man fighting to ensure his family’s survival, but coming up against the interests of the big logging companies. Who does he turn to for help?
Also on the programme, the trials of Iranian journalists in exile. Since the ´óÏó´«Ã½ was banned in Iran four years ago, our Iranian colleagues have suffered harassment from the authorities – and they can’t return to their homeland. Parto Parvin – not her real name – relates the story of her own family, and life in exile.
Plus, Petroc Trelawny visits a flea market in Hungary, and novelist Will Self finds the Romanian capital to be very un-homelike. Paul Moss boards a plane in the middle of England, only to find a microcosm of the Middle East. And in Paris, John Laurenson wonders if French men have lost the art of seduction.
