As February edges in I am aware that the work to do in the garden piles up and soon it will be all go out there as the gardening season gets underway. I鈥榲e spent some time clearing away the last of the autumn leaves from the driveway and the paths following this with a spray of weed killer to halt the growth of the weeds which are already showing above the surface.

The shrubs have also been given a haircut and the Pear tree has been given the once over thinning out the weak growth and tipping back the healthy stems, and, hopefully the tree will produce some lovely fruit especially after last year when the late frosts made all the newly forming fruits to drop off.

The Hellebores look healthy as their bright pink and yellows fill the borders at the end of the garden with this stunning display. The daffodils and Hazel trees are now budding up which will make a superb display in the next few weeks. My vegetable garden has now been fully dug and left for the weather to break up the soil when I will break it down to a fine tilth ready for planting early potatoes and sowing salad seeds. No chance, by the way to give the lawn a cut due to the very wet weather.

Spring bulbs will be in full growth now and as new buds for next years flowering are formed early this year then feeding is important during the late winter months so Sulphate Of Potash should be spread around spring bulbs now. Add some mulch so that the feed gets down to the roots being careful not to damage the growth being made now. If fed now tyou鈥檒l reduce the problem of bulbs without flower buds he problems of next springs bulbs coming through blind, that is without flower buds, will be reduced.
