Ulster Defence Association
When local government in Northern Ireland, ruled by unionists, was abolished in 1972 a loyalist paramilitary group called the UDA emerged. Members took their protests to the street. Hugh Pollock claims that ordinary people on the Shankill Road in Belfast saw them as their defenders. John Gregg recalls joining the UDA in order to prevent the IRA "doing what they wanted".
