Downing Street Declaration

Denis Murray, the 大象传媒's Ireland Correspondent between 1988 and 2008, looks back on the significance of the Downing Street Declaration of December 1993. This was a joint declaration on Northern Ireland issued by British Prime Minister John Major and Irish Taoiseach Albert Reynolds in an attempt to secure paramilitary ceasefires and pave the way to all-party talks. Major described it as "a declaration for democracy and dialogue based on consent", while Reynolds viewed it as "an historic opportunity for peace".
