Peter Hain remembers horrors of apartheid struggles
Peter Hain visits the Supreme Court in Pretoria with family friend Jill Wentzel. The court was the scene of the trial of the Hain family friend John Harris. Harris, a fellow Liberal, had decided to abandon the non-violent opposition to apartheid, and had begun a campaign of sabotage. A bomb planted at the Johannesburg railway station exploded and killed an old lady, despite Harris' telephone warning to the Police. John Harris was found guilty of murder and hanged. The Hain family were ostracised for their support for the Harris family and left South Africa for the UK the following year.
