The invention of the railway
Michael Mosley, Cassie Newland and Mark Miodownik from the ´óÏó´«Ã½ series The Genius of Invention describe the scientific achievements of Richard Trevithick and George Stephenson. In 1801, Richard Trevithick built the first steam locomotive. In the years after this, George Stephenson developed the ‘iron road’ using steam locomotives to pull wagons on rails. The first public trip was in 1825. George Stephenson’s innovative construction methods are described.
