June 1971
- Prime Minister Edward Heath was chosen to lead the British Admirals Cup yacht race entry.
- Teachers in the National Union of Schoolmasters were on strike. 听Pupils on the Isle of Wight walked out in support of their teachers.
- Cigarettes carrying a Government warning began to appear in the shops.

- Education Minister Margaret Thatcher promised a conference of education officers in Eastbourne, there would be more money available for primary school buildings.
- Airline BOAC cancelled their order for three Boeing jumbo jets.
- The annual race relations board report criticised prejudice in housing and in social life.
- Police were treating as arson, a fire in London's Inverness Terrace in which two people were killed. Nine people were killed in another recent fire in a hotel in Bayswater.听
- The city of York was celebrating it's 1900th anniversary.
- The annual London to Calais powerboat race started from Tower Bridge.
- One hundred revellers were arrested at the Reading pop festival.
- Eight thousand protesters in Birmingham demanded an inquiry into the working of the Abortion Act.
- The government announced an extra 拢500 million would be spent on completing a network of motorways around England.
- Three Russian cosmonauts were found dead when Soyuz 11 landed.
June 1985
- The fifth warship to bear the name "Ark Royal" was handed over to the Royal Navy in Portsmouth.
- Southampton factory 'A.C. Spark Plugs' started manufacturing new catalytic convertors, designed to cut down exhaust fumes in vehicles.
- The workforce at the British Hovercraft Corporation in Cowes were facing possible redundancy after the chairman of the parent company 'Westland' resigned.听
- The centre of Southampton was sealed off for five hours after a suspect package was found inside the rail tunnel.
- The Rt. Rev. Colin James was enthroned as Bishop of Winchester.
- The Purbeck Stone Heritage Festival took place at Swanage听
- The P&O liner 'Sea Princess' was delayed in Southampton after a 24 hour strike by the crew in protest over planned changes in employment conditions.

- Portsmouth docks marked the 500th anniversary of the world's first dry dock.
- Patients at Southampton General Hospital had their operations cancelled after bags of blood were found with faulty heat seals.
- Southampton FC Manager Alan Ball left the club to join Manchester City.
- Over 200 jobs were lost at the Marconi factory in Hilsea.
- The 拢8 million ROMANSE traffic control centre in Southampton was branded a waste of money by local residents, who claimed the new system had slowed traffic too much.
- There was an open day at the Portland Navy base.
- A body was found below the cliffs on Portland Bill.
- The actor Hugh Grant returned to England for the first time since his arrest with a prostitute in Los Angeles.
- An earthquake, registering a moment magnitude of 6.2, hit the city of Aigio in Greece, resulting in several deaths and significant damage to many buildings.
- The IOC selected Salt Lake City to host the 2002 Winter Olympics.
- Japanese police rescue 365 hostages from a hijacked All Nippon Airways Flight 857 at Hakodate airport.听
- South Africa won the Rugby World Cup.
- Space Shuttle Atlantis docked with the Russian Mir space station for the first time.
