Sculptures of people
Sculptor Patricia Coates talks about her sculptures of people and demonstrates how she creates the characters. She shows sculptures that she has previously created and then moves on to create a sculpture of someone she knows well. She makes tubes out of newspaper and tapes them together into a frame for the figure she is creating, adding hands before creating a head shape from wire. Patricia covers the body in wire to reinforce it before strips of material dipped in cement are wrapped around the framework. The artist selects clothes for her figure to wear, before dipping them in the cement mixture as well. The finishing touch is a hat, also painted with cement and the final sculpture is unveiled as a self portrait.
