IPCC Meeting
As the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change came together this week to discuss the latest report on climate change which addresses the long term issues of climate change in the world, Gareth Mitchell speaks with Navin Singh Khadka to find out whether and how these issues are addressed effectively in one of the world’s worst hit regions – South Asia.
Water on Mars
NASA’s Curiosity Rover on Mars has found large quantities of water locked within its surface soil. Scientists say there is enough water for future humans visiting the Red Planet to extract water for drinking supplies. Curiosity is now preparing to drill through the Martian layers to analyse if there’s any organic material preserved within it. The research could suggest that Mars is less of the barren inhospitable environment than previously supposed.
Navigation
We all rely on GPS - the Global Positioning System network of satellites - whether we want to or not. From shipping to taxis to mobile phones, our lives depend upon this low-power, weak and vulnerable signal beamed from a few tonnes of electronics orbiting above our heads. This dependence is a new Achilles' heel for the world's financial, commercial and military establishments. From white van drivers evading the boss's scrutiny over lunch to North Korea's more nefarious efforts to disrupt the South's maritime and airborne fleet, it turns out that this signal is easily disrupted. But now scientists are working on alternative. Quentin Cooper discovers what can be done.
